What is a CBCT scan?

A CBCT scan is a 3D dental X-ray. The difference with regular dental X-rays is that a regular X-ray is only 2D. CBCT stands for cone beam computed tomography. The CBCT scan uses a cone beam that takes multiple X-rays as the machine rotates around your head and then collates them into a 3D image, so we can see more of the structures in your face. Basically, CBCT works like a cone beam that rotates around your head, takes multiple X-rays, and collates them into a 3D image.

What is CBCT used for in dentistry?

A CBCT scan is useful in dentistry for planning implants, and it shows the bone density and the location of the implant where it should be placed properly. Another thing is that during a root canal, where they need to see a certain canal or configuration in the root of a certain tooth, and also during ortho, that will also show where the tooth is located, and also the jawbone.

The other thing is when there is an impacted tooth, like wisdom teeth, they can pinpoint the location exactly. When a dentist needs to identify structures around the tooth that extend beyond it, CBCT is the best diagnostic tool to use. A CBCT is recommended if you want to see more than just that.

How does CBCT help with dental implant planning?

CBCT is very helpful for planning dental implants because it will show you the bone density or how thick the bone is that's available for the placement of an implant, and how long the implant can go, because it will also show the location of the mandibular nerve. You can avoid that area.

With the CBCT, you can see the nerve structure in there, the bone density, and also if there's a presence of a cyst, tumor, or infection in the jaw of a patient that's not visible on the regular standard X-ray.

What should a patient expect during a CBCT scan?

What the patient can expect during a CBCT scan is that they could be standing and holding something, and the machine goes around their head for about 20 to 40 seconds. Also, they will wear an apron to protect themselves as well, and then possibly remove any jewelry.

How much does a CBCT scan cost?

CBCT can cost in a range between 250 to 500. It also depends on where you're going to have it done. It could be at an imaging center, which will be a different price compared to a dental office, and the cost might also be affected by your insurance coverage. Some insurance covers a certain amount.

Are CBCT scans safe?

CBCT scans are pretty safe. They can detect abnormalities, which is why you need a CBCT to check for tumors, to check for cysts, to check for infection, and also the location of the nerve and the maxillary sinus.

How do I get a CBCT scan?

Usually, CBCT is not a routine dental X-ray. If a dentist would recommend that to you, they will usually give you a referral if they don't have that capability in their office. It depends on your dentist, who will be able to help you with that. The dental provider you have, if they don't have it, will be able to assist you with where to get it done, because most likely dentists would know who has the CBCT, or they will refer you if you do need a CBCT.
